WordPress Security Basics Every Site Owner Should Maintain

Practical account, update, backup and access habits; no plugin can guarantee a completely secure website.

Website security is ongoing. A plugin can add useful controls, but it cannot make a site immune to attack. Good baseline practices reduce avoidable risk and make recovery more manageable.

Protect access

Use unique passwords, enable two-factor authentication where available and limit administrator accounts to people who need them. Remove old contractor access when work ends. Share access through a secure method rather than sending passwords in a public enquiry or chat.

Maintain software and backups

Keep WordPress core, themes and plugins updated, but plan updates for business-critical stores and test key paths afterward. Remove extensions that are unused. Keep backups in a location separate from the site and confirm how to restore them. A backup that has never been checked may not be useful when the site fails.

Know when to get help

Unexpected redirects, unfamiliar admin users, changed files or hosting warnings deserve investigation. If you suspect a compromise, contact the host and avoid deleting evidence before the incident is understood. A routine bug-fix package is not a full malware investigation. For regulated data or breach obligations, consult qualified security and legal professionals. Record who owns hosting, domain, DNS and plugin licenses so recovery is not delayed by account confusion.
